World Literacy Day 2024

adults take literacy classes under the shade of a tree in South Sudan.

Thanks to your generosity last year, 47,405 vulnerable people across Africa and the Middle East received access to quality education programmes at nursery, primary, secondary, vocational level and teacher training!

At IJI, we reach out to the world’s most marginalized and displaced children are a huge focus to our work. Fewer than 23% of displaced children are able to access secondary education and of this immensely small group, fewer than 30% are girls.

World Literacy day is about highlighting the inequality in access to education and championing #EducationForAll.

Education is the stepping stones to a brighter future and together we can transform lives

In Nigeria, with your support we empowered 1,000 students in Girls for Girls (G4G) clubs providing learners with uniforms, learning materials and reusable menstrual hygiene pads. In addition, your donations trained 50 women teachers in pedagogy and classroom management and 2 classroom blocks were renovated in 2 communities in Borno state.

In South Sudan, where access to education is a constant struggle, as well as supporting over 1,000 students through quality schooling, in Loyola Secondary School (LSS) in Wau, we gave budding students the opportunities for skills-development through school supports with teaching aids, including a science laboratory, classroom supplies and a school feeding programme which addressed the concerning number of students from food insecure homes.

It is heartbreaking to hear the stories from teachers and of students who, often walking miles to attend school, struggle to reach their full potential with fainting commonplace from lack of food.

Together we can continue to fill empty bellies and give children the supportive and safe learning environments they need.

In addition, our education projects have also supported adult learners by way of group literacy classes and vocational trainings in Solar & Electrics, Construction, Masonry, ICT, and Tailoring courses at LSS Wau and St Peter Claver Ecology & Computer Centre (SPCECC) in Rumbek.
