The war in Sudan continues to ravage the lives of thousands of people.
Military violence and bombing campaigns have displaced families and those who are fortunate enough to flee, often with just the clothes on their backs, have arrived at Renk, one of the transit zones at the border of neighbouring South Sudan.
It is at Renk, that YOUR SUPPORT and generosity is making a massive difference to communities who have experienced the unimaginable.
As well as providing emergency humanitarian aid such as food, shelter and medical assistance – refugee camps at the transit zone become a source of respite for those who have taken long and dangerous journeys to safety.
Last year alone, over 3,000 people were supported with emergency Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) including physiotherapy services with specific focus on individuals with disabilities who were provided with assistive mobility devices.
The communities in Renk, often returnees to South Sudan, face the challenge of piecing their lives back together and for thousands of children – this means safe spaces for continued schooling, counselling & kind and patient support.
For this support to be lasting and grow, empowering the communities to make that lasting impact for themselves is incredibly important.
Over 40 (22 male & 20 female) refugees received professional teacher training and English language tuition to not only prepare them to support the education needs of their communities but upskilling, which for many, gave them a new sense of purpose in defiance of all they had experienced.
Your support has helped people like, Muhktar, who completed his English training in pursuit of building a career as a teacher at Nuj Kur primary school in Renk.
While in Sudan, Muhktar ran a food business before the war. He fled to South Sudan, losing that business and all his savings. Upon reaching Renk, he was stranded and decided to apply for a teaching job in one of the local schools in Renk.
This teaching training has transformed him.
‘‘I was always scared to enter class; I was very nervous and doubted my ability!” he said.
Muhktar’s passion and dedication is inspiring.
On his graduation, he gave a speech saying: “I will not be nervous in class anymore, I am ready to get to class and change the lives of my learners. I can now speak English and know how to control and manage my class. I am a proud Teacher.”
To continue to help support amazing people like, Muhktar, you can be amazing too and donate to our project fund that develops professional and supportive teachers so that marginalised communities can develop and thrive!
